When I tell you MKA era is my roman empire. I was so obsessed I thought they were black like me. I think this was my first time learning about race as a kid as embarrassing as it is lol. I think I've heard of parasocial relationships but I never knew the definition so thank you for sharing this with a perfect break down!
My parasocial relationship with one direction was what kept me alive during my teenage years. And I wish I was exaggerating. The sense of community and virtual friendships you can find in fandoms are a type of connection hard to explain to someone who's never been a fan of something in a parasocial degree.
It's so hard to explain. I have many friends who are into fandom — I mean, many of them I met *through* fandom — but no one in my family gets it, and it's hard not to feel like it's silly. And it's NOT silly, but when they don't get it...it's hard.
Omg I can relate 100% … I have had tons of parasocial relationships with characters on shows but also to objects? Like I love collecting mugs and whenever I drink from them I feel not only happy but fulfilled and they give me safety … the same way when I was tuning in my fav shows. I just recently rewatched Desperate Housewives and oh my did I forgot what a masterpiece that show was and my parasocial relationship with eadie… thank you so much for this!
It's so nice to see you refer to Elizabeth Olsen as "Lizzie" -- all TRUE MK&A fans know that is, and has always been, her real name. lol. Thanks for the compassionate reframe on a coping skill many of us have in common <3
Loved this! I can relate to a lot of it and can also tell them apart as babies 🤭😂 I was also obsessed with Holiday in the Sun and Billboard Dad lmao. Our Lips Are Sealed made me proud to be from Sydney AU 😆💞 great read, and interesting reflections on what leads to such obsessions in our youth.
Holiday in the Sun and Billboard Dad are my fave full-length MKA movies (along with Winning London)! I always wanted to visit the Atlantis Resort featured in Holiday in the Sun lol.
I know right! I do have access to google drive links to everything so feel free to hit me up when you're in the mood to watch and I can send them along 👀
Ahhhh loved this! I’ve started re-collecting all the MK & A VHS tapes I used to have. I recently rewatched The Challenge and…it does not hold up. Winning London is next on my list 🥹
Hahaha (un?)fortunately I have consistently rewatched them enough that I don't even know the meaning of hold up anymore. The only one I truly didn't like (and still don't) was When In Rome. Please report back on your Winning London thoughts - that one is my fave!
I definitely will! Winning London was also my fave but I haven’t seen it in years. That one definitely had some of the best clothes as I remember so I’m excited to rewatch for sure.
It's a lifeline for me too but the problem for me is that I've used this as an escapism and I don't want to let go.
No because you GET it!!! The way I used hyper fixation to self numb through hard times!!
Yes exactly!!
They were the original it girls :')

This is amazing haha
I love this!! Can honestly say parasocial relationships have been a lifeline for me… Felt very validated by this piece 🫂
Same here!
And I'm so glad ❤️

I somehow still have never seen that show but a couple of my friends have been talking about it again so maybe I should!!

hahah so true. the parasocial relationship runs deep because I still call her Lizzie!
I love this—and relate on so many facets of this🩷
<3 <3
I thought I was the only one who read their magazine!! Also I personally don’t understand the people who can’t tell them apart.
I was so sad it only lasted a few issues! Really wonder what happened there. I don't get it either??? They're fraternal, it's so easy.

Thanks so much <3
Me too!! 😂 Brianna from Holiday in the Sun being a personal enemy of mine might also have something to do with parasocial relationships lmao
ok “so little time” and “two of a kind!” 😭 I want to rewatch them both. And I LOVED their movie “it takes two”

Who have you had parasocial relationships with? Let's talk! 👀
I loved this!!!
Thank you!

The best fits! Totally agree
