This was a great read. Loved the DCC documentary and I had similar thoughts about it. Somehow it all seemed so wrong but at the same time the girls seem to love it and they are in their early 20s, so it might be worth it? But there is one scene that was the most cringe-worthy of all to me: the stadium tour, where a group of men was shown the DCC locker room and they had to “pick their favorite cheerleader”.

YES! My girlfriends and I were watching it together and immediately turned to eachother with disgusted faces. We were like are you serious right now?? Especially when he said “Some of these girls could do your taxes!” as if it was a surprising possibility that these ladies have brains. To that Id say yes sir, they have brains. More than you, clearly!

Oh god, that statement was so not needed. The fact that these girls have to have a job to pay for life is not something they should be advertising.

Charlotte talking about how much they get paid made my blood BOIL! I can't believe what she's on a year. Overall I feel like it was much more light touch on some really serious issues than Cheer was, like it addressed a lot but never really went in enough on the major things.

I totally agree that the camaraderie is appealing - I remember it from when I used to do ballet twice a week with not even close to the level of intensity! - but Victoria's tangible pain on not being included is just as familiar from moments of being at an all-girls school. It can't always be the shiny sisterhood they make it out to be.

Great piece, thanks for writing it for me specifically <3

Totally agree on all points! I wish it had gotten as deep as Cheer did and I wanted to get to know some of the other girls. Victoria was very interesting and had a lot of compassion for her but I could've done without getting to know much of Reece, for example.

totally binged the docuseries. i thought it was so interesting, but also found a lot of things idk sketchy? like the way the dancers are criticized for their weight/appearances, their unbelievable low pay, all the SA stuff. i loved hearing the stories of the girls though!!

What was just BENDING my brain was that there are only about 30 of them!? What’s 30 decent salaries to the wider DC brand?

It’s just baffling, and the only reason I can pluck is that they actually have no respect for these women—they might even hate them. Misogyny is a weird thing.

Yes! I did the math and to just pay them like 6 figures would only cost them a few million and they're worth 9 billion! It's insanity
