I hear you - I still feel like Carrie Bradshaw whenever I sit down to write my newsletters. I feel like Carrie is the epitome of that unrealistic lifestyle - beautiful and spacious Manhattan apartment, love for expensive shoes and 99,9% of her meals out. But hey, one can dream!
I second the motion for a 5 hour docuseries about Margulies vs. Panjabi. Actually, I might need an entire narrative show about the behind the scenes antics of the show. How did The Good Wife get their ability to forecast future problems on the same level as The Simpsons? Why was every 2010s era Broadway star either a victim or a lawyer? I need answers!
Sigh, they definitely sold us the dream. I'm over here still wishing for the same as I slug through my day job (writing contracts at a tech company, which is not my soul's calling).
Side note, love your writing & happy I found your substack!
Such a fun read! Even though this was the antithesis of the film, I always idolized Andy’s job in Devil Wears Prada. Miranda Priestly aside, she got an incredible makeover, to be around clothes all day, two men fawning over her, and then a satisfying ending where the leaves the world behind for her own aspirations. That, and Jenna Rink’s job ofc, was the dream for middle school Helen haha. It’s funny how movies set up dreams in one way or another; the best ones are too impactful not to do so.
Helen! I completely agree haha I almost included it and then I was like WELL not quite the same as the rest, but it still felt very aspirational. That movie is one of my faves and I watch it at least once a month.
oh my god, I feel this so much. I hard relate to the burnout recovery thing, I'm also navigating this. I'm relying on the newsletter revolution to help me realise all my journalist dreams and then I can just write substack posts forever and ever and that will be enough to fund my entire life :)

I definitely sometimes will get a Carrie-like monologue in my head when I'm writing haha

P.S. - I hope you had a great wedding!
ALWAYS! For me, I hear her saying "I couldn't help but wonder..."
I’m binge-watching a TV show right now (Monk lol— do you remember it?) and I pressed pause just to read this 🥰
You’re my new favourite newsletter. Comforting, nostalgic, relatable. ❤️
Ahh thank you so much! That means the world to me. (I do remember that show! It's such a good one, and Tony Shaloub is perfect)
Okay I came for the Andie Anderson How To Girl discussion but I'll stay forever for this Diet Coke rating system
LOL thank you. I think it's fun, but I have also been concerned it veers too heavily into dumb, so I'm glad you like it!!
Just stay away from that damn Apatow!

YES, I'm begging the universe to make this happen for us!
